Plant-Based Sloppy Joes Grilled Cheese

A fan favourite way to use our Very Good Taco Stuff’r is sloppy joes. And we thought why not upgrade it? Sloppy Joes Grilled Cheese is the perfect combination of saucy-ness and cheesy-ness.

PREP TIME:  50 minutes
COOK TIME: 40 minutes
YIELD: 8 Servings

INGREDIENTS

Sloppy Joes

  • 1 tbsp neutral oil
  • 1 pkg Very Good Taco Stuff’er
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 1 green, yellow or red pepper, finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (5.5oz/156ml) can tomato paste
  • 1 cup no-beef or no-chicken broth
  • 5 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp mustard powder
  • 2 tsp sage powder
  • 3/4 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper
  • 2 tsp plant-based Worcestershire, optional but recommended

Sloppy Joe Grilled Cheese

DIRECTIONS

Sloppy Joes

  1. In a non-stick pan over medium-high heat, add oil. Once hot, add in taco stuff’r and cook until golden and crisp, about 5-6 minutes.
  2. Add in onion, peppers, and garlic. Cook until tender, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add in remaining sloppy joe ingredients. Bring to a simmer, lower heat, and allow to simmer for 20 minutes.
  4. Taste and adjust seasoning as desired.

Sloppy Joe Grilled Cheese

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 F.
  2. Butter or oil one side of each piece of toast. And place 8 slices, butter side down onto a sheet pan.
  3. Top with cheese and beef mixture on bread pieces. Top with more cheese and then bread butter side up.
  4. Bake for 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bread is golden.
  5. Remove from the oven. Allow to cool a few minutes before cutting sandwiches in half. 

ADDITIONAL NOTES

Substitutes: If you don’t have Taco Stuff’r you can substitute it with 3 The Very Good Burger OR Smokin Burgers and chop them finely.
